About Keihoku area

The area is almost the same as Osaka CityKeihoku is located in the northwestern part of Kyoto City, in the headwaters of the Katsura River.
The total area is 217.68k㎡, which is about the same size as Osaka City.It is an environment full of greenery, with 93% of the vast land occupied by forests.
This area has been famous for producing high quality timber since ancient times.During the construction of Nagaokakyo and Heiankyo, and when the Kyoto Imperial Palace was on fire, a huge amount of building materials were carried by [raft flow] via the Katsura and Hozu rivers.Since then, it has been known as a famous timber producing area since it has been supplying timber to the capital.

History of KeihokuHistory flow over [1300 years] from the Heian period to the present

  • Heian period

    There is a record that Yamakokugo used the Katsura River to the Hozu River during the construction of Heiankyo and donated the timber by "rafting", and the timber was transported by that method until the early Showa period.

  • Northern and Northern Dynasties

    Emperor Kogon opened "Joshokoji Temple" in Yamakokugo, and there is an emperor's tomb in the back of the precincts.
    "Joshokoji" is said to be the birthplace of natto.

  • Sengoku period

    Until then, Mr. Utsu, a landlord, ruled the Keihoku area, but after being destroyed by the attack of Akechi Mitsuhide, Mitsuhide built Zhoushan Castle.It was destroyed by the Toyotomi army due to the Honnoji Incident, but the vast remains of a stone wall are still there.

  • Edo Period

    Although it was ruled by the Sonobe and Sasayama domains, the mountain country village became a [forbidden royal palace (the territory of the emperor's family)].

  • Meiji Era

    During the Meiji Restoration, farmers formed a [Mountain National Corps] and participated in the government army and played an active role. [Yamakokutai] is famous for decorating the head of the "Jidai Matsuri" procession in Kyoto (Meiji Restoration).

  • Meiji 12 (1879)

    Kitakuwada-gun was established.The county office was set up in Higae Village.

  • Showa 30 (1955)

    Keihoku Town was established (1 town and 5 villages) by merging Shuzan Town, Hosono Village, Utsu Village, Yamaguni Village, Kuroda Village, and Yuge Village.

  • Heisei 17 year (2005 year)

    Keihoku-cho has been incorporated into Kyoto City (Ukyo Ward).

  • Reiwa 2 years (2020)

    Kyoto City Kyoto Keihoku Elementary and Junior High School has opened.
