"Oshio no Agematsu" is a brave fire festival held to offer lights to Atago Shrine, which is said to have begun around 960 AD.
It has been designated an intangible folk cultural property of Kyoto Prefecture and is held at Agematsuba, across the river from Hiyoshi Shrine in Oshio Town, Yamaguni District.

As the sun sets and darkness begins to fall, countless torches are lit around the venue.

When the time came, the men lit small torches tied to ropes and swung them around to increase the flames.

Then, torches are thrown towards a basket called a "moji," which is shaped like an inverted umbrella (2 meters in diameter and 4 meters high) and is tied to a lantern pole (torogi) 15 meters above the ground.
You can see the spectacular sight of the flames of the thrown bonfires creating arcs in the night sky.

As the small burning pine is swung around, it draws an arc of fire and creates multiple circles of light.

Countless torches are thrown up until the fire reaches the "moji" 15 meters above.
The character is repeatedly thrown into the air until three torches are thrown into it.

In the late summer night sky, torches trace an arc, and eventually the thrown torches catch fire, igniting the wooden lanterns. As the lanterns burst into flames and become giant torches, they are slowly pulled down to the ground.

When the wooden lantern falls dramatically, scattering large sparks, loud cheers erupt from the spectators along the route.
