Just over an hour's drive from the city of Kyoto, there is a colony of gigantic cedars that are said to be over 700 to 1000 years old.

Many visitors are surprised to find such a giant cedar tree so close to the ancient capital of Kyoto.
A cedar that grows several trunks on a single plant is called Daisugi (sometimes seen in restaurant gardens, etc.), and Fushijo Daisugi is the one that has grown to a gigantic size.
The area around the headwaters of the Katabagawa River, where this huge cedar forest is located, has been protected as Gosho Goryo (royal estate of the imperial family) since ancient times. There are records that a large amount of building materials were supplied from this area.
In the Meiji era, it was paid off to the private sector due to the dismantling of the royal land (the royal royal land) (1869). It is said that a huge cedar remained because it was devalued and escaped from the hands of felling.

The cedar in the photo is a ``Shukusugi'', which has six types of trees (Ryobu, Soyogo, Kosiabra, Nejiki, Noriutsugi, and Japanese cedar) living in the withered stand cedar. The sight of various species of trees gathered around a giant cedar gives off a sense of beauty and exquisite balance despite its unusual shape, making you feel the mystery of life.
