In the Oshio district of the Yamakuni region, the Agematsu ritual is held on the evening of the Saturday closest to Obon on August 8rd each year, a fire festival to offer lights at Atago Shrine.

For the Agematsu, small torches are attached to ropes and swung around, then thrown up into the air toward a basket (2 meters in diameter, 4 meters in height) that resembles an upside-down umbrella and is called a Moji, which is tied to a Torogi (a wooden lantern) XNUMX meters above.

Countless small bonfire torches are thrown up until they reach the Moji 15 meters above.

The bonfire pine draws an arc in the late summer night sky, and eventually the bonfire pine that was thrown in catches fire and turns into a giant bonfire pine that is then pulled to the ground, eliciting loud cheers from the spectators along the route.

*Because the Oshio Agematsu is a religious ceremony, a barrier is set up on the bridge leading to the Agematsu site, so only those involved can enter, but you can view it from across the river. Drinks and snacks are also sold at Hiyoshi Shrine.
